Three way tie at Nordea Masters

Two eagles in a round of 67 helped Spaniard Alvaro Quiros move into a three-way share of the lead with Frenchman Victor Dubuisson and England’s Eddie Pepperell at the halfway mark of the Nordea Masters.

On a day dominated by the strong winds at PGA Sweden National, big-hitting Qurios eagled the par five 11th hole – his second after starting on the tenth tee – and also made a three on the first hole, added to birdies on the 15th and 18th holes, to move to six under par.

Dubuisson, who is returning from a shoulder injury, had earlier set the pace with a round of 69, while Pepperell recovered from a double bogey on the par three fourth hole with two birdies on the back nine, including the finishing hole, to retain a share of the lead.

Pepperell reflected the feeling as to just how tough the conditions were. “It becomes fun when it is this tough as everyone else is finding it hard. It’s about hanging in there and not letting it get to you," he said. "I enjoy that type of golf. I’ve grown up playing amateur stuff in England on links in these sort of conditions, so I enjoy it. Today was a completely different day to yesterday. I felt I played just as well today, but six shots difference suggests the course was considerably tougher.”

World Number Two Henrik Stenson momentarily delighted the home fans when he moved to the top of the leaderboard on seven under par with consecutive birdies on the 14th and 15th hole. However, a bogey followed on the 16th and he then found the water on the 17th, which lead to a double bogey five.

A birdie on the last hole meant the 2013 Race to Dubai champion signed for a round of 70, and on five under par he is only one shot back going into the weekend, in a share of fourth alongside compatriot Jens Dantorp (73), Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee (70), Welshman Bradley Dredge (70) and Scottish pair Stephen Gallacher (72) and Chris Doak (69).

“It was as strong wind out there and it was really tough at times," said the pre tournament favourite Stenson. "I played better today than I did yesterday and of course I would have wished for a bit more. It wasn’t the finish that I was looking for, but the 16th is a tough hole and the 17th too, and I just let it go a bit too much to the left in the wind and it hit the side of the green and into the water, Then you are facing a tough shot in the drop zone in the cross-wind.

“I was hoping for an easier way to make four on the last. I had a nice drive and a good four iron which just hit the mound and ended up in the trap. I didn’t play the best bunker shot but it still gave me a putt and it was nice to make birdie and it looks pretty good now going into the weekend.”

Richard Green continues his good recent form and is only three shots from the lead and is leading the Australians
