State Team and National Squad Member, Won Joon Lee, has given the field something to catch after day one of the NSW Amateur Championship Medal. Won Joon recorded a new course record score of 8 under par 63 at the Ryde-Parramatta Golf Club. This outstripped the previous course record by 4 strokes.
His round included 10 birdies and two bogies. He started quietly with regulation pars on the first three holes before “waking up” and carding four consecutive birdies on his way to an outward total of 5 under par 30 for the front nine.
Last year’s Medal winner Gary Wolstenholme of England, Bonnie Doon’s Mitchell Tighe and John McMiles of Liverpool Golf Club were next best on 68. Included in Wolstenholme’s round were 6 birdies, a bogey and a double bogey. His double bogey came at the par 3 17th, which proved a treacherous challenge on the day with a 12 and plenty of 7’s being recorded.
Wolstenholme is always a threat with his steady accuracy being a huge plus on the tight tree lined layouts of Ryde-Parramatta and Strathfield Golf Clubs. The seven time Walker Cup representative, along with Lee and others in the leading bunch, will move to Strathfield Golf Course tomorrow for the second eighteen holes of the 72 hole stroke play. Whilst McMiles being the only player among the leaders whose first round was at Strathfield Golf Club goes to Ryde-Parramatta Golf Club for his second round.
Other under par scores for the day were recorded by Rohan Blizard (NSWGC), Josh de Groot (Pymble), Richard Gallichan (Toukley), Matthew Jones (Easts Leisure and Golf Maitland), John Lee (Ryde-Parramatta), Richard Ramsey (Scotland), Mark Thomson (Castle Hill), Justin Hurst (Bathurst), Michael Raseta (Mona Vale), Joshua Rindfleish (Oatlands), Justin Roach (Bonnie Doon), and Matthew Smith (Royal Canberra).
The field will be cut to the top 60 plus ties following Sunday’s 18 holes and the final 36 holes will be conducted at Strathfield Golf Club on Monday. The top 32 players then head for Concord Golf Club for the match play which begins on Wednesday 8 February continuing through knockout stages culminating in the NSW Amateur Championship Final on Sunday 12 February.
