Ryde-Parramatta Golf Club was the scene of a crime yesterday after a situation which saw round two of the NSW Amateur Championship delayed for several hours.
The incident occurred during the afternoon round when a man, who had just held up a supermarket, drove a stolen truck onto the golf course, down the 7th hole to the 6th hole, before running from the vehicle with a gun into a nearby house. Police set up a perimeter around the house before the man eventually surrendered.
Play later resumed and the round was thankfully completed prior to darkness.
Meanwhile at Strathfield Golf Club, several players laid siege to the first round leader Won Joon Lee who shot a second round 71 for a two round total of 134. Making up ground with the lowest score at Strathfield for the tournament so far, Scotland’s Richard Ramsay (pictured, courtesy of A.Powter) shot a score of 67 to steal his way into 2nd place, two shots behind Lee.
The ever present Gary Wolstenholme (England) whose consistent and accurate play saw him shoot his second sub par round, is a further shot back on 137, whilst State Representative Richard Gallichan, with a pair of 69’s (138), made his way into the leading pack.
The best score of the day at Ryde Parramatta was 69 by Ray Beaufils (Surfers Paradise) and Peter Nascimento (The Lakes).
The tournament continues today at Strathfield Golf Club with the leading 60 players plus ties playing the final 36 holes of the Medal, before the top 32 players head to Concord Golf Club for the Match play starting Wednesday.
