Ruffels and Vilips World Junior Champs

Australian Ryan Ruffels is the Callaway World Junior Champion, the Victorian based golfer producing a final round of 69 at the famed South Course at Torrey Pines earning him a two shot victory in the 15-17 or‘senior’ age group.

Ruffels was born and raised in the US but in more recent times moved with his family to Victoria where is father, former Australian tennis great, Ray, has a coaching role with Tennis Australia

Ruffels finished 7th in the event last year but with another twelve months of elite amateur golf behind him he was able to secure the significant title in world junior golf.

Ruffels defeated Taiwan’s Chun An Yu by two shots.

New Zealander Charlie Hillier finished in 10th place while the next best Australian after the winner was West Australian Curtis Luck who finished strongly with a round of 69 to finish 13th.

Shelley Shin did best in the girls 15-17 division when she finished 26th.

Meanwhile in the Boys 11-12 division, Australian, Karl Vilips, earned his second World Junior title by winning in a playoff over American Ryan Smith.

Vilips had won the 9-10 age group in 2012.
