Steve Alker adds to NZ golf stocks

New Zealander Steve Alker may have lost a playoff for this week’s Albertsons Boise Open in Boise in Idaho but he guaranteed himself of an even bigger prize when his second place cheque pushed him past the level of earnings he will need to finish inside the top 25 at season’s end and assure himself of a return to the PGA Tour.

Prizemoney in this event was amongst the highest on the Web.Com Tour and the US$86,000 Alker earned for his runner-up finish takes him well inside the money he will need to graduate next season.

Alker, who won earlier in the season in Cleveland on the Web.Com Tour, has advanced his earnings to US$211,000 and moves to 9th position on the money list.

With the leading 25 players at the completion of this season graduating to the PGA Tour next season, Alker will return to the holy grail of professional golf in 2014 having played there previously in the early 2000’s.

Alker played the PGA Tour for the first time in 2003.

Alker lost a playoff at the first extra hole after a final day battle with another former PGA Tour player, Steve Wheatcroft, who moves to 11th on the money list and will also be back on the PGA Tour in 2014.

Along with Lydia Ko, who won on the LPGA Tour this week, New Zealand golf will have more representatives with full status on the LPGA and PGA Tours in 2015 than has been the case in many years

Australians did not have a particularly good week with James Nitties the best of them in 25th position. Steve Allan was 25th.

Cameron Percy is the leading Australian on this year’s money list in 31st position.
