Tight contest likely at Senior Open

The world of senior golf is in Bridgend in Wales for this week’s Senior Open Championship at the famed Royal Porthcawl Golf Club.

34 years after winning his first European Tour title in that country, Bernhard Langer returns to Wales as the favourite although with the likes of Miguel Angel Jimenez, Colin Montgomerie and 2012 champion Fred Couples he will face a real task if he is to win the event for the second occasion.

Langer won this Senior Open Championship in 2012 but has become such a regular contender since he is likely to be a real factor this week.

Jimenez won on debut on the Champions Tour just a few days after finishing a very impressive 8th at the Masters.

Montgomerie won his second senior major when successful at the recent US Senior Open.

“You wait 23 years to win in America, or win a Major, and two turn up at the same time,” said Montgomerie. “I knew I had gained confidence from the first win. I did play well at Benton Harbor in the US Senior PGA and it gave me confidence to go into the US. Senior Open and perform there.

“I didn’t play as well there as I did at Benton Harbor, but the conditions were very severe conditions. And I’m not saying the wind or rain; I’m talking heat. It was amazing.

“So this is very different. This is a whole different ballgame. This is like coming from Roland Garros on the clay to the grass at Wimbledon. This is very different and you have to adapt accordingly to the conditions.

“This is fiery and this is a true links test of golf.”

Couples returns after a two month break following on going injury issues. If he is fit enough then he has a chance of another Senior Open title.

Australasians in the field include Peter Senior, Peter Fowler, Mike Harwood, Greg Turner, Richard Backwell and Darryl Purchase. Backwell and Purchase gained entry via the qualifying process last week.
