Yet another first time winner this year on USPGA Tour

The depth of the USPGA Tour has never been more clearly illustrated than by the number of first time winners this season. Bob Burns becomes the sixteenth player to record his first USPGA Tour win this year and he was forced to hold off a rather significant field to do so.
Burns had started his last round one behind leader Chris DiMarco and he showed great composure, given the situation, in putting together a near faultless round to eventually win by a shot from DiMarco who in turn managed to edge a flying Tiger Woods by one. Woods who was looking for his third win at this event in what is virtually his own backyard, kept coming in the last round but was unable to hole a six footer at he last which may have applied that little extra presuure on Burns.
Tour rookie Hidimechi Tanaka and Tim Herron were tied for fourth. Tanaka has done well in his first season successfully retaining the card that he gained at the Tour School last year.
The leading Australians were Rod Pampling and Stuart Appleby each picking up a cheque for $US42,000. New Zealander Michael Long helped his cause towards avoiding stage 2 qualifying with a 17th place finish also, Craig Parry was 31st, Peter Lonard 40th.
There are now just the two events left for those outside the top thirty before they pull the curtain on this season's money list.
