Su Hyun Oh doing well at US Amateur

Qualifying has been completed at the US Women’s Amateur Championship at the Nassau Country Club in Glen Cove on Long Island in New York, the leading 64 players now headed for the match play phase.

Californian Bethany Wu was the only player to produce two rounds in the 60’s adding a second round of 68 to her opening 69 to lead the qualifiers by one shot over Californian Andrea Lee and Australian Su Hyun Oh who led after day one and added a second round of two over par 72.

Victoria’s Oh is currently the eighth highest ranked female amateur in the world and second behind Minjee Lee in the Australian amateur golf ranking.

Only one other Australian was in the week’s field, Perth’s Jayde Panos missed out on the top 64 by some margin. Panos has been playing collegiate golf in Oklahoma and has just completed her final year.

Perhaps surprisingly world number one amateur, Min Jee Lee, did not play this week’s event, her recent heavy schedule no doubt taking its toll although this is the most significant title in amateur golf and one she has yet to win.

Lee is expected to turn professional before too long and given her performances already at the professional level then she is expected to go on to a great career in the paid ranks.
