Plenty at stake in Web.Com Tour Finals
BY Bruce Young | Web.com Tour | 2014 Hotel Fitness Championship | Preview | 27 Aug 2014
The first of the Web.Com Tour Finals begins Thursday at the Hotel Fitness Championship at the Sycamore Hills Golf Club in Fort Wayne in Indiana.
The leading 75 players from the season long Web.Com Tour are joined by those players finishing between 126th and 200th on the FedEx Cup points list from the PGA Tour. Those players, of whom 130 are entered, are competing to determine the 50 places available on the PGA Tour in 2015.
Twenty five of those places have already been decided but the actual ranking of those places and the remaining twenty five will be determined over the next four weeks in consecutive events worth US1 million each.
Those events culminate in the Web.Com Tour Championship to be played at the TPC Sawgrass begining September 18th.
The money secured by all those inside the twenty five on the Web.Com Tour money list is carried over to these events so those coming in from the outside face an even tougher battle to retain their rights to play the PGA Tour. This is a change from last year where there was no carry over money from the regular tour season and has been made to favour those who have performed well enough all season to finish inside the top twenty five.
This week’s event is being played for just the second occasion the first being won last year by Trevor Immelman by a shot over Patrick Cantlay with Scott Gardiner sharing 3rd with Kevin Kisner.
Immelman is back in an attempt to defend his title and regain his PGA Tour rights after a horror season on the PGA Tour.
The leading player on this year’s Web.Com Tour, Carlos Ortiz won his third event of the season in Portland last week and will likely start as the favourite but this is a field stacked full of some of the game’s most talented young players along with many very experienced players trying to regain the right to play the PGA Tour.
It is a week full of drama and heartache as the careers of many are put on the line.
Major winners in the field include Trevor Immelman and Y.E Yang.
The Australasian contingent is large and with only Cameron Percy and Steve Alker guaranteed of their cards for 2015 there is much to play for.
Percy and Alker are joined by Steve Allan, Adam Crawford, Scott Gardiner, Mathew Goggin, Ashley Hall, Scott Hend, Bronson La Cassie, Rod Pampling, Alistair Presnell and Aron Price,
