2006 Australian Amateur attracts record field

IN: News | Australian Mens Amateur | Australian Amateur Championship (2006) | Preview | 09 Mar 2006

A record field has entered for this year's Australian Amateur Championship in Tasmania. The championship continues its tradition of attracting the best amateurs from Australia and around the world.

This year's event, to be held at Royal Hobart and Tasmania Golf Clubs from March 23-29 has drawn an entry list of 306 players - significantly ahead of the previous best list of 253 in 2000.

Last year's champion, Scot Eric Ramsey, will not be defending the title he won at Royal Melbourne as he has turned professional, but the cream of Australia's amateur stars will battle a strong international field.

Among those lining up for one of the world's most sought-after amateur trophies will be players from the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Canada, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Korea.

Australian players expected to be major challengers for the tournament include Won Joon Lee, Andrew Tampion, Jason Day, Andrew Dodt and Mitchell Brown.

Lee, from Concord Golf Club, won the recent New South Wales Amateur Championship and is a former Korean Amateur Champion. Queenslander Andrew Dodt, who was a semi-finalist in the 2004 Australian Amateur, was a member of Australia's major international amateur teams last year - the Four Nations, Southern Cross and Asia Pacific Teams. Tampion, from Victoria, was runner-up to Ramsey at Royal Melbourne while Brown took out the NSW Amateur title last year. Day is a former World Junior Champion and Leading Amateur in the Australian Open.
