Beaufils leads Queensland Medal

IN: News | Queensland Mens | Queensland Medal (2006) | Round One | 26 Apr 2006

Ray Beaufils (Surfers Paradise) leads the Queensland Medal after firing a 66 (-6) this afternoon to take the lead after the first round at Indooroopilly Golf Club's east course.

It was a round that "could have been" for the Queensland Academy of Sport scholarship holder, and consisted of seven birdies, a triple bogey and a chip in on the last (9th) for eagle. Beaufils, who commented after his round that he had been struggling for form recently, was happy with the round however was still disappointed with his drive on the 18th (his 9th) that ended out of bounds and caused a triple bogey 7.

It was a perfect day for golf with temperatures in the mid to high 20's, with no wind and plenty of sunshine. Indooroopilly Golf Club members Ben Pisani and Paul Donahoo took advantage of the conditions in the morning and are hot on Beaufils' heels with both players carding six birdies and one bogey on their way to 67's (-5) to be one shot behind.

In touch with the leader after returning scores of 68 (-4) are Richard Talsma (Virginia), Kyle Grant (Mona Vale, NSW) and New Zealand golfer Leighton James (The Grange, NZ).

One shot further back are Kevin Lee (Oxley), Luke Paroz (Caboolture) and Hayden Braham (Emerald Lakes) after rounds of 69 (-3).

2006 Australian Medalist and outstanding young golfer, Jason Day (Hills) and recently crowned Australian Junior Champion Boy Watts both fired rounds of 71 (-1) and remain in touch, however both will be looking to improve as the week progresses.

The second round will be played tomorrow and the field will then be cut to the leading 60 players (plus ties) who will contest the final 2 rounds on Friday.

The leading 16 players will then qualify for the Queensland Amateur Championship (matchplay) at Gold Coast Burleigh Golf Club next week.
