Jason Day goes low to win QLD Medal

IN: News | Queensland Mens | Queensland Medal (2006) | Final Round | 28 Apr 2006

Jason Day (Hills) has fired two stunning rounds including a course record 63 and then a 65 this afternoon to win the Queensland Medal by six shots from New South Welshman Mitchell Krywulycz (New South Wales). It was an outstanding day of golf with Krywulcyz firing an excellent round this afternoon of 66 (-6) that was equalled by Justin Maker (Virginia) and only bettered by Day.

Day started the day six shots behind overnight leader Ray Beaufils (Surfers Paradise), and by mid way through his back nine, had managed to catch and pass him. Beaufils managed to a 72 this morning, and a disappointing 74 this afternoon saw him finish in tied 5th position, twelve shots behind Day.

Day set up his impressive round of 63 with a 31 (-5) on the front nine and then managed birdies on the 10th, 14th, 15th and 16th to finish with 63. He lipped out on the 18th for birdie and what would have been a 62 (-10). Never-the-less the round will be recognised as the course record for the Indooroopilly Golf Club's East Course layout (Blue and Green).

Another great round this morning was returned by Queensland Academy of Sport scholarship holder Nathan Uebergang (Indooroopilly) who managed to eagle the 3rd and 9th holes on his way to a 65 (-7). The round helped Uebergang jump inside the important leading 16 players that qualified for the Queensland Amateur Championship next week.

The top 16 players will qualify for the Queensland Amateur Championship with Day to take on newly crowned Australian Junior Champion Boyd Watts (Yeppoon) in the first round. Watts survived a three man playoff for the final position in the draw for the matchplay section. Day was the 2004 Australian Junior Champion, a victory that was the first major victory in now a very impressive resume.

Each match in the Queensland Amateur Championship will be held over 36 holes at the Gold Coast Burleigh Golf Club with the first match commencing at 7:00am on Tuesday 2nd May. The final will be held on Friday 5th May.
