IN: News | Queensland Mens | Queensland Amateur Championship (2006) | Round One | 02 May 2006
The Queensland Amateur Championship commenced this morning at Gold Coast Burleigh Golf Club with some spectacular golf including a hole-in-one albatross by Ray Beaufils (Surfers Paradise). The morning's play was certainly highlighted by Beaufils, who holed his drive on the par 4 third hole on his way to a 7 & 6 win over Justin Maker (Virginia). It was not only his first albatross, but his first hole in one.
Jason Day accounted for Australian Junior Champion Boyd Watts (Yeppoon) in a quality performance winning 7 & 6 and will be looking to get his hands on the Queensland Amateur trophy he won 2 years ago as a 16 year old.
Ben Pisani defeated talented young New Zealand golfer Leighton James, 4 & 3.
Queensland Junior Team member Warrick Betts (Indooroopilly) proved again his strength at matchplay defeating Queensland Academy of Sport member Brett Rankin (Pacific) 5 & 4. Betts showed his liking for matchplay remaining undefeated in the recent Australian Junior Interstate Teams Matches held in Toowoomba.
