Day, Beaufils take early lead at QLD Amateur

IN: News | Queensland Mens | Queensland Amateur Championship (2006) | Semi-Finals | 04 May 2006

The semi-finals of the 2006 Queensland Amateur Championship have produced some outstanding golf this morning at the Gold Coast Burleigh Golf Club. On day three of the Championship, Jason Day and Ray Beaufils are in commanding positions going to lunch (after 18 holes) in their respective 36 hole matches.

Unlike his previous matches Ray Beaufils (Surfers Paradise) started slowly today, in his contest against fellow Queensland Academy of Sport scholarship holder Nathan Uebergang (Indooroopilly). Beaufils still managed to get to 2up through nine holes before he got hot on the back nine. Beaufils managed birdies on the 12th, 13th, 15th and 16th holes and also eagled the par 5 14th. He then had a 5 foot put on the 18th hole for birdie and a 29 on the back nine. He missed the put but his lead of 8up through 18 holes should be enough to reserve a spot in tomorrow's final.

The other semi final also produced some unbelievable golf with Jason Day (Hills) battling it out with impressive 17-year-old Kevin Lee (Oxley). Both players played well on the front 9 with Day shooting 32 (-3) and managing a 1up lead. He, like Beaufils then got hot on the back nine with four birdies in a row from the 12th hole to extend his lead to 5up. Lee would then win the 17th to reduce the deficit to 4.

Then on 18 Lee spectacularly holed his 2nd shot on the 368m par 4 and went to lunch at only 3 down. Day had hit the green on 18 but didn't need to putt however in a stroke round would have had 2 putts for a 65 (-6) illustrating the quality of golf on display.

This afternoon's rounds commence at 11:30 and 11:40 and final results will be posted as soon as possible following the close of play.

All matches are over 36 holes and the semi-final progress scores are listed below:
Jason Day (3up) v Kevin Lee
Ray Beaufils (8up) v Nathan Uebergangen

The final will be held tomorrow (Friday 5th May) over 36 holes.
