Day leads QLD Amateur Final

IN: News | Queensland Mens | Queensland Amateur Championship (2006) | Grand Final | 05 May 2006

The final of the Queensland Amateur Championship began this morning between two rising stars of the game. 18-year-old Jason Day (Hills) against 19-year-old Ray Beaufils (Surfers Paradise).

Beaufils got off to a good start and birdied the first to go one up. He then hit his drive on the 3rd right of the green into what looked an impossible position to get the ball close on the short par 4. He somehow managed to find a gap in the trees, land the ball over the greenside bunker and the ball hit the flag coming to rest only 30cm from the hole. Day was only just short of the green and failed to get up and down.

The tide would then change and Day would make his move. Slowly at first with birdies and wins on the 5th and 7th. Beaufils birdied the 8th to take the lead again and then Day birdied the 9th to get the match back to all square.

The back 9 was dominated by Day, who won the first three holes to take a strong lead at 3up. Beaufils birdied the par 5 13th hole and Day missed a putt of approximately 30cm to lose the hole. The next hole was halved in birdie 4's and Day lead 2up.

Day then birdied the 15th while Beaufils missed his birdie attempt from closer than Day. The lead was back to 3up.

Beaufils then hit a fantastic approach on the 16th hole to gimme distance while Day's 4 metre birdie putt caught the lip but did not drop. Both players parred the last two holes with Day going to lunch at 2up.

The second 18 holes commences at 11:45am.
