Tampion wins Keperra Bowl in playoff

IN: News | Queensland Mens | Keperra Bowl (2006) | Wrap | 12 May 2006

Talented Victorian golfer, Andrew Tampion (Kingswood) has beaten Ray Beaufils (Surfers Paradise) this afternoon on the third hole of a sudden death playoff to win the 2006 Optus Business Direct Keperra Bowl. Tampion holed a miraculous putt of over 20 metres from the front of the 18th green for birdie to win the Championship after the first two holes were halved.

Tampion threatened from the outset and played outstanding golf throughout the final round shooting a 67 (-5). The round was soured by a final hole double bogey 6 which saw him fall back into the playoff with Beaufils.

It was an exciting finish to Queensland's National Selection Trial event which attracts the country's leading amateur golfers. At one stage there were a host of players in contention and all of them found some sort of trouble in the closing holes. Beaufils will certainly rue the triple bogey 7 on the 15th hole which saw him fall out of the lead at fifteen under par (-15).

Another player that will reflect on a missed opportunity is recently crowned Australian Amateur Champion, Tim Stewart (Monash) who had a putt of less than 3 metres on the15th to take the lead at fifteen under par (-15). He finished in equal fourth place at ten under (-10) courtesy of a double bogey, bogey, bogey finish.

Brenton Haines (Mandurah) fired the day's best round of 66 (-6) to move into outright third position at eleven under par (-11). Overnight leader Richie Gallichan (Toukley) had a day to forget shooting a 76 ( 4) to finish tied with Stewart in fourth place.

The two man interstate teams event which is a tradition of the National Selection Trial Events was won by Victoria's team of Tampion and Andrew Martin (Yarra Yarra) at seventeen under (-17). They won by three shots from the Western Australian team of Rick Kulacz (Hartfield) and Stephen Dartnall (Royal Perth).
