Tournament reduced from 72 to 54 holes. The Sybase Classic presented by Lincoln Mercury will be reduced from 72 to 54 holes because of rain that has plagued the New Rochelle, N.Y., area all week. The first round was cut short due to rain and darkness leaving 15 players that did not finish play on Thursday. First-round play and the start of the second round were to be contested on Friday, but heavy rains prevented any shots from being struck and delayed the conclusion of the first round and the start of the second round until Saturday.
On Saturday, the remaining 15 players that needed to complete the first round did so and the second round was also completed on Saturday. With more rain forecasted for Sunday afternoon, the decision to shorten the tournament from 72 to 54 holes was made. The last time a tournament was shortened by rain was the 2003 State Farm Classic, which was won by Candie Kung.
Once prior in the 16-year history of the Sybase Classic presented by Lincoln Mercury has the tournament been cut short by rain. In 2000, Annika Sorenstam won the rain-shortened event with a final-round 1-over-par 72 to finish at 206 (-7). She entered the final round trailing Allison Finney by a shot, but ended up winning by one over Rosie Jones. Finney shot 75 and finished third.
Seventy-one players made the 36-hole cut, which came at 150 ( 8) at the Sybase Classic presented by Lincoln Mercury. The 8-over-par cut is the highest cut on Tour this year, bettering the cut at the Kraft Nabisco Championship by two shots. The Kraft Nabisco Championship was played on the par-72 Dinah Shore Tournament Course at Mission Hills Country Club, while the Sybase Classic presented by Lincoln Mercury is contested at the par-71 Wykagyl Country Club.
