A crisp morning welcomed players to the Western Australian Golf Club for the first group’s departure at 7:05 am local time. Players enjoyed ideal scoring conditions for the entire morning round on the immaculately presented par 70 WAGC layout.
Queenslander Adam Crawford produced 8 birdies and an eagle during his opening round 61. His 9 under par tally leading the morning players by four shots and equalling the lowest score in the clubs 78 year history.
Victorian Andrew Pitt held clubhouse honours at 5 under par for most of the morning until Crawford closed his last four holes in 4 under par with an eagle on the last the highlight.
Playing in the feature morning group with tournament favorites Kim Felton and David Diaz and in true Queensland spirit the 30-year-old underdog produced a day’s work that he will remember for many years.
A confident Crawford will attempt to secure his first significant title on Australian soil before he commences preparations for another assault on the lucrative US PGA Tour (via the Qualifying School) in October.
