In what offers the richest the chance to get richer, the top thirty on this season’s USPGA Tour money list will line up in Atlanta for the Tour Championship this week. This will be the third staging of the event at the East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta in the last five years, the event having been alternated in recent times between there and the Champions Club in Houston.

What a field as you would expect from the top thirty on the money list. Fourteen of the top twenty in the world rankings and a field that has won a combined total of $US73,000,000 on the USPGA Tour alone this year, with another $US5,000,000 available here.

Mike Weir is the defending champion beating Garcia, Els and Toms, with Phil Mickelson having won the last time it was played here in 2000. That year he beat Woods.

Robert Allenby is the only Australian, Stuart Appleby having missed a spot by just two places at the completion of the Buick Challenge last week.

The course at East Lake is almost one hundred years old. Originally built in 1904 and designed then by Tom Bendelow, it was remodelled by Donald Ross in 1915 then again in 1959 by George Cobb.
