Frances Bondad from New South Wales Golf Club has lead from start to finish to win the 2006 NSW 72 Holes Stroke Play Championship.
Played at the tough Glenmore Heritage Valley Golf Club at the base of the Blue Mountains in Sydney's west, Frances opened with a course record 4 under par 68 to open up a seven stroke lead after the first round. Rounds of 75 and 74 followed, but Frances' lead was cut to just one stroke going into the final round.
With her boyfriend, Singapore National Golf Team Member Jonathan Leong, as her caddie, Frances birdied three of the last four holes to record a final round 70 to claim a three stroke victory.
Recent Australian Amateur runner up, Haeji Kang from Surfers Paradise Golf Club finished in second place, three strokes behind Frances on 290. The round of the Championship belonged to Skye Choueiri-Solly from The Lakes Golf Club who returned a course record 5 under par 67 on the final day to claim third place. Rebecca Flood from Coonabarabran Golf Club in the State's west finished fourth with 296, followed by Sarah Oh from Macquarie Links Golf Club on 297.
The NSW 72 Holes Stroke Play Championship was Frances' first major victory, and she was thrilled to win the event after finishing second in both the Queensland and Victorian 72 Holes Stroke Play Championships earlier this year. Frances said the week was made all the more special with Jonathan as her caddie, who relaxed her during the four rounds. Frances' name has now been added to the Trophy which includes past winners Karrie Webb, Michelle Ellis and Nikki Campbell.
