Day continues fine form at Northeast Amateur

Australian Amateur Stroke Play champion Jason Day continued with his solid form of late to be the leading Australian after the first round of the Northeast Amateur Championship at Wannamoisett Country Club some 3 hours northeast of New York. Day shot a one over 70 and is positioned T23rd, only three behind the leaders following the first round.
It was unfortunately not the same result for the other Australians playing this week, with Rick Kulacz having a 73 to be T60th and Andrew Dolt with an opening 74 coming in at T70th. With no cut and play over four days, the opportunity exists for improvement and both Kulacz and Dolt will be looking for better second round scores.
Day is full of confidence after a top ten finish in last week's Monroe Invitational Championship. The 5th ranked amateur in the world has the capacity to score low and will be looking for a similar second round as last week where he shot a 67 on a day when the rest of the field struggled.
The Northeast Amateur Championship is regarded as one of the major amateur US Championships. Previous winners have included David Duval (1991), Notah Begay III (1995) and Luke Donald who is the only player to have won successive titles in 2000 & 2001. No Australian has won the event and with the form Day brings to the Championship, that may change.
