Defending Champion Sarah Oh from Macquarie Links Golf Club has taken out the Johnson and Johnson Pacific 2006 NSW State Championship at Pymble Golf Club with a thrilling win over Frances Bondad from New South Wales Golf Club.
The Championship Final could not have been scripted better with arguably the two in-form golfers in NSW fighting it out in the Final. The final score of 2 and 1 indicated the closeness of the two players after the match was all square following the first 18 holes.
Sarah's qualifying scores of 74 and 75 for a 5 over par total of 149 at Avondale Golf Club, saw her qualify in second position. Sarah defeated NSW Institute of Sport Scholarship holder, Jenny Fox in the first round of Match Play 2 and 1, before defeating Bree Turnbull from Western Australia 1 up in the quarter-finals. Sarah then reached the final by defeating Rebecca Flood from Coonabarabran Golf Club 4 and 3. Frances Bondad had qualified in 4th position, and defeated number one qualifier Kate Thomas 2 and 1 to reach the Final.
Sarah, who turns 18 in November, adds this title to her growing list of achievements, and is the first player to win back to back NSW State Championship titles since Nikki Campbell in 2002.
Kate Thomas from Manly Golf Club was the leading qualifier with a 3 over par total of 147 for the two qualifying rounds which saw her take out the Silver Basket, the Leo Wray Bowl for the best 36 Holes Nett, and the Metropolitan Championship Cup for the best score returned by a Metropolitan player. Sarah's qualifying score saw her take out the Country Championship Cup, as Macquarie Links Golf Club is situated in the Women's Golf Nepean Illawarra District according to current WGNSW District boundaries.
In the NSWLGU Salver, for those players who qualified in positions 17-24, Ashleigh Odgers from Waratah Golf Club defeated Samantha Ferguson from Coolangatta-Tweeds Heads Golf Club on the 21st hole. It was a great win for Ashleigh who has been concentrating on her studies this year and has not played a lot of golf.
