Davis fires course record in QLD Senior Open
IN: News | Queensland Mens | Queensland Senior Open (2006) | Round One | 25 Jul 2006
Legendary Australian golfer, Rodger Davis has fired an unbelievable round of 62 (-9) to take a 7 shot lead in the first round of the inaugural Queensland Senior Open Championship at Nudgee Golf Club today. Davis' round consisted of 10 birdies and one bogey and was one shot better than the previous course record set by Ryan Haller.
Sitting in second place, seven shots behind Davis are professionals David Merriman (NSW), Bryan Smith (QLD), John Tolhurst (QLD) and Les Allen (NSW). A further shot behind is the leading amateur Trevor Box (Ocean Shores) and Western Australian professional Lyndsay Stephen.
It was an impressive round by Davis though and his lead will certainly make it difficult for the other players in the field to catch him. Davis' career has been impressive with no less than 16 wins in Australia, and one of the many highlights would certainly be his win in the 1988 Bicentennial Classic at Royal Melbourne.
It was a fantastic start to the Senior Open concept which has been initiated by the Nudgee Golf Club, the PGA (Qld division) and the Queensland Golf Union. It forms an important part in both the professional and amateur calendars and is a great opportunity for the amateurs to compare their game to the leading senior professionals.
By definition, a senior golfer in the professional ranks is 50 years and over, whilst a senior in the amateur ranks is 55 years and over. This definition obviously provides the professionals with an advantage here this week, however the amateurs are still keen to compete with the pros in the inaugural Senior Open Championship.
