Shani Waugh, Lorena Ochoa and Mi Hyun Kim share the lead on six-under-par after first round 66s at the Evian Masters.
Australian Waugh is a three-time winner on the Ladies European Tour, while Ochoa, from Mexico, and Kim, from Korea, have both already won twice this year on the US LPGA Tour.
This year’s Kraft Nabisco Champion Karrie Webb of Australia trails the trio by a stroke while England’s Laura Davies, Korea’s Se Ri Pak and Wendy Ward from the USA are just two shots off the pace on four-under-par. Annika Sorenstam and sixteen-year-old sensation Michelle Wie, the world numbers one and two respectively, are three back on three-under-par along with Suzann Pettersen, Wendy Ward, Michelle Redman and Heather Young, nee Bowie, who won a car for her hole-in-one at the 17th hole today.
The defending champion Paula Creamer, 19, from the USA, is one of six players on two-under-par.
“It’s the best field in women’s golf all year, so there’s lot of great players,” said Waugh, who qualified for the tournament by winning the Thailand Ladies Open last year.
“I mean everyone in the field is a great player, so there’s going to be lots of them who are going to be chasing me.”
