World number 37 Robert Allenby will return to the Hyatt Regency Coolum this December to defend his Cadbury Schweppes Australian PGA Championship crown. Allenby created history last year by winning the “Triple Crown” which included the Centenary PGA Championship title. It was his third PGA Championship after winning back to back in 2000 and 2001.
“I’ve won the last three Australian PGA’s I’ve played and I’ll be doing everything I can to keep that record intact,” said Allenby. “I really enjoy the event and my family love coming back to Coolum,” he added.
“Rob has supported this event for many years. His continued support means a lot to us and we look forward to having our Centenary Champion tee it up in defence,” said PGA Chief Executive Officer, Max Garske.
So far this year, the 35 year-old Victorian has made the top ten twice on the US PGA Tour, finishing fourth at the Bay Hill Invitational which was won by fellow Australian Rod Pampling, and equal ninth at the Booz Allen Classic.
Allenby’s consistent form in the USA also has him sitting in the top spot on their “All-Around Ranking” statistic which is computed by totalling a player’s rank in the categories of scoring leaders, putting leaders, eagle leaders, birdie leaders, sand saves, greens in regulation, driving distance and driving accuracy.
Allenby gave the crowds a thrilling finish last year, with a magnificent play on the difficult 18th hole at Coolum to win the Centenary PGA Championship by one shot from Tasmanian Mathew Goggin.
“Robert proved last year what an outstanding champion he is and we’re thrilled to see him back to defend in 2006,” said a Cadbury Schweppes spokesperson.
The 2006 Cadbury Schweppes Australian PGA Championship will be held at the Hyatt Regency Coolum in Queensland from December 4-10 as part of the Australasian summer of golf.
