On what was an average scoring day for a field of champions, Charles Howell III carded -1 (69) to move one shot ahead of a group of four players following the second round of the US$5 million Tour Championship in Atlanta.

Overnight co-leaders Vijay Singh and Steve Lowery both posted 1 (71) to close the day alongside David Toms, who is looking for his first win of the season, and Len Mattiace at -4.

World number one Tiger Woods made up for a poor first round yesterday by firing a -2 (68) and is now just three shots off the lead and in a four-way tie for 9th place at -1.

Robert Allenby carded a -1 (69) to move from equal last place into equal 25th at 3. Allenby is the only Australasian to have made the Tour Championship.
