Reigning US Open Champion and world number eight Geoff Ogilvy today confirmed he will play in the Cadbury Schweppes Australian PGA Championship at Hyatt Regency Coolum this December.

Speaking on the eve of the US PGA Championship in Chicago, the final major of the year, Ogilvy is clearly happy to be supporting Australian events like the PGA.

“I’m thrilled to be in a position to support the Cadbury Schweppes Australian PGA Championship in Queensland,” he said. “One thing that hasn’t changed since I won the US Open is my desire to support Australian golf and to have a win on home soil,” he added.

PGA Chief Executive, Max Garske, was equally delighted the US Open Champion has confirmed his intention to play in Australia’s oldest professional golf tournament.

“Geoff is an enormous talent and in winning the US Open has broken the drought of major winners amongst many of our current international players,” Garske said. “The event will have a world class field again this year and to have the reigning US Open champion in our tournament two years running is a real coup,” he added.

Ogilvy’s best finish at an Australian PGA Championship was in 2001 at Royal Queensland Golf Club where he finished runner-up by one shot to the current defending champion, Robert Allenby. With Allenby already confirmed for the event, it will no doubt create some great rivalry between the two Victorians when play begins.

The Cadbury Schweppes Australian PGA Championship will be played 7-10 December at the Hyatt Regency Coolum on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.
