There will be no “stinger” 2 iron approach shots in Tiger Woods’ repertoire of shots at the USPGA Championship this week. The narrow greens on the par fives at Medinah Country Club are not receptive to a low approach shot. Instead, the world number one intends to add a five wood to his bag, the objective being to get more height and a softer landing on his second shot.

The layout for this year’s PGA Championship has received critical acclaim from the world’s number one.
“The golf course is absolutely fantastic. Obviously they’ve lengthened some of the holes and the greens have been redone, but the golf course is such a wonderful layout, wonderful shape to it. It’s one of the neat golf courses we get to play. It’s old and traditional and it’s just very straightforward. I mean, you’ve got to hit the ball well and obviously control your irons into these greens in order to have a chance.”
Woods feels the par 5’s will hold the key to success this week at Medinah Country Club. They’re reachable and present real birdie opportunities to the field.
Practice day on Tuesday witnessed most of the field becoming accustomed to the course. Australia’s young guns Ogilvy, Scott and Buckle took to the Medinah layout together, all looking relaxed as they shared the odd joke and talked freely during their round.
As with any event Tiger plays, considerable attention was on him and whether he can continue his remarkable form of late to claim yet another major title. One thing is for certain, come Thursday morning when Tiger is paired with Phil Mickelson and Geoff Ogilvy in the first round, he will be thinking about the number 51.
