LaCassie lets opportunity slip at US Amateur

IN: News | US Mens Amateur | US Amateur Championship (2006) | Matchplay Round Two | by Bruce Young | 25 Aug 2006

With just six holes to go in his second round match against American Mark Strickland, Bronson LaCassie (QLD), was three up and appeared to be well on his way to victory and a place in the round of 16 at the US Amateur Championship.

36-year-old Georgian, Strickland, found a way however to birdie three of the last six holes to take the match into extra time, which he then won at the 19th hole with a birdie to LaCassie's bogey. It will be a bitter pill to swallow for the 23-year-old LaCassie, who had eased through his first round match yesterday against Andres Echavarria of Colombia.

LaCassie will be back in college in two weeks time to continue his studies at the nearby University of Minnesota after having won the Western Amateur two weeks ago and finished fifth in strokeplay qualifying for this week.
