Ian Poulter won his second Italian Open title in just three years in dramatic circumstances when England's Paul Lawrie, went out of bounds on the final hole. Poulter posted a birdie at the 18th to close with a -3 (69), which left him at -19 and earned him the Open title by two strokes from Lawrie.
Lawrie had moved a stroke in front of Poulter at the 17th hole of the rain-reduced three round tournament, but then Lawrie, the 1999 British Open Champion, threw his tee shot into the trees at the 18th to double-bogey and posted a 70.
Jarrod Moseley finished the best of the nine-man Australasian contingent this week, after the tournament was reduced to just 54 holes. Moseley fired a final day 70 to finish with -14 and in equal 6th. Nick O'Hern was next best at -13 and in equal 10th closely followed by Peter Fowler at -10 (T23). Brett Rumford, the only other ANZ player to make the cut, finished at -7 (T44).
