Golf Australia announced that ABC TV has secured the rights to broadcast the MFS Women’s Australian Open for three years. In a further boost for women’s golf and joining title sponsor MFS at the event will be leading whitegoods brand, Fisher & Paykel as a supporting sponsor. In addition, New South Wales Major Events Board who played an integral role in planning for the championships, are also a partner.
Paul McNamee, Executive Chairman of the Opens, Golf Australia stated, “Securing television rights for the Open is a significant leap forward to promoting women in golf, women in sport and on a broader scale, golf in Australia, we are thrilled at the result.”
ABC TV has confirmed eight hours live coverage of the Open including on-air promotion of the event.
Golf Australia has secured Fisher & Paykel as the official whitegoods sponsor of the 2007 MFS Women’s Open. This is the first time that Fisher & Paykel has forayed into golf; the sponsorship package also reaches club levels with a new grassroots competition for women, the Fisher & Paykel Classic.
New South Wales Major Events Board has extended its support to include the Women’s Open. The State Government is also a key partner of the 2006 MFS Australian Open (Men’s) held in November.
“Locking in funding and getting the event up and televised was our first priority,” said McNamee. "MFS is our major sponsor for the next four years and now with New South Wales Major Events Board and Fisher & Paykel joining the Open coupled with the skill, talent and glamour that women’s golf delivers, we are well on track to delivering an outstanding event.
“Women’s golf and in general women in sport have been under the radar for too long, so it is our aim to bring the Women’s Open back stronger than ever for our players and the community.
“Our partnerships at media, government and corporate levels clearly deliver a strong message for the future of women’s golf in this country,” McNamee added.
The MFS Women’s Australian Open will be held at The Royal Sydney Golf Club from 1 to 4 February 2007.
