Queenslander Terry Price shot a course record 66 to be on top of the NSW Open Championship leaderboard, halfway through the first round at Horizons Golf Resort, Salamander Bay today. The 41 year-old registered seven birdies in a blistering start to the tournament, but he was still cautious about his prospects over the next three rounds.
“I’ve been hitting the ball well over the last couple of weeks (but) the golf course was set up perfectly for it today, the greens were perfect and the course is in great shape.
“Nobody’s getting carried away. They know that it’s going to blow over the next few days. Today’s score was good, but the golf course allowed it.”
Despite his guarded comments, Price leads Victorian Justin Norris (67) by one shot, with New South Welshman Ed Stedman a further shot back.
NSW Amateur Nevin Basic produced the surprise round of the day, only getting a start in the Open after the failure of a qualified player to arrive for his round. Basic learned of his good fortune just two minutes before tee off, but finished the day with an impressive three under par 70.
A park-and-ride system has been set up for golf fans travelling to Horizons to watch the competition over the next three days. Visitors can park at the Gan Gan army camp off Nelson Bay Road and take a $2 shuttle bus to the course.
Entry fees for Thursday and Friday are just $10, with children under 12 free. Entry for the final rounds on Saturday and Sunday is $15.
