Hoshino's Tokai victory rewards consistency

A brilliant final round of 67 has seen the 29-year-old Hidemasa Hoshino win just his second Japan Golf Tour event at this weekend’s Coca Cola Tokai Classic near Nagoya.
Hoshino had started the last round some four shots behind the relatively unheralded Hiroo Kawai but a brilliant stretch of holes early in his back nine saw Hoshino sweep to the lead and then despite a late double bogey he was able to win by two over Katsumasa Miyamoto while five players shared third place two further back. Those in third place were Camilo Villegas, Nobuhiro Masuda, Ryuchi Oda, Shingo Katayama, Jeev Milkha Singh and Hiroo Kawai.
The win took Hoshino into third place on the 2006 money list. While he may not have won since his maiden victory at the Crowns in 2003, Hoshino has become one of the most consistent players on the Japan Tour since. He has not missed a cut in 17 tournaments in 2006 and has been inside the top twenty in eleven of those starts. He had been twice runner up at the recent Sega Sammy and Suntory tournaments.
The demanding layout at the Miyoshi Golf Club’s West Course, where rough was allowed to grow very long and thick, put the quality field to the test and the winning score of 282 was the highest winning total in the history of the event although the par had been reduced to 71 from 72 for this year’s event
Paul Sheehan was the best of the Australians finishing in 26th position while Rich Tate was 53rd.
The Japan Golf Tour now heads to the Kasumigaseki Country Club’s West Course in Saitama for this week’s Japan Open Golf Championship where Shingo Katayama will defend the title he won at the Hirono Golf Club in 2005.
