Queenslander Terry Price stands at the top of the leaderboard after a six under par 66, in the first round of the NSW Open Championship at Horizons Golf Resort, Salamander Bay.

The 41 year-old notched seven birdies and just one bogey in a blistering start to the tournament. He leads the event by one stroke, ahead of Victorian Jason Norris (67) and fellow Queenslander Marcus Cain, who battled windy afternoon conditions to be four under with three holes to play.

Price said he was impressed by the Horizons layout, but remained cautious ahead of an afternoon tee-off in the second round.

“The golf course was set up perfectly today, the greens were perfect and the course is in great shape. Nobody’s getting carried away. If the wind blows up it could mean five, six, maybe more shots to your score.”

A string of players are tied on three under, including last week’s Queensland Open winner Andrew Buckle. NSW player Paul Riley hit a hole-in-one at the 180 metre par three sixth hole, but was inconsistent in the windy conditions and finished with 76.

A park-and-ride system has been set up for golf fans travelling to Horizons to watch the competition over the next three days. Visitors can park at the Gan Gan army camp off Nelson Bay Road and take a $2 shuttle bus to the course.

Entry fees for Thursday and Friday are just $10, with children under 12 free. Entry for the final rounds on Saturday and Sunday is $15.
