Australian and Queensland Junior representative Daniel Nisbet (Caboolture), has fired an unbelievable round of 64 (-8) to take a commanding lead after 36 holes in the 16 – 17 years division of the 2006 Gary Player Classic at Pacific Golf Club. Nisbet backed up his opening round of 72 (even) with a round that consisted of 8 birdies and an eagle on the 18th (final) hole.

Nisbet leads overnight leader Tarquin MacManus (Pacific) by six shots after MacManus returned a 74 ( 2) this afternoon to be at 142 (-2) after 2 rounds. A further shot back is Mark Song (Indooroopilly) who shot a 69 (-3) today.

Impressive young golfer Jackson Park (Nudgee) has fired a superb second round of 68 (-4) to lead the 15 Years and Under division of the Gary Player Classic today. Park’s total of 143 (-1) is three shots ahead of nearest rival Chris Wood (Wynnum).

It really was a round “that could have been” for Park, who fired an unbelievable 8 birdies in his round today, showing the potential this 15 year old possesses. Wood’s round of 70 today was also impressive for the young man from Wynnum and it is a further 4 shots back to Nathan Kinch (Surfers Paradise) in third place after his round of 74 ( 2) today.

Ray Beaufils leads the 18-20 Years division after another superb round of 68 (-4) today to go with his opening 67 (-5) and be at 135 (-9) through 36 holes. Overnight co-leader Kevin Lee (Oxley) fired an indifferent round of 73 ( 1), and now trails Beaufils by 5 shots, sitting at -4. A further shot back is local Pacific member Brett Rankin after rounds of 73 ( 1) and 68 (-4).

Beaufils big hitting and aggressive display has now returned 13 birdies over the 36 holes on a golf course that is an excellent test of golf.

The Gary Player Classic is a 72 hole Championship with the players under 18 years vying for the all important Australian Junior Order of Merit (AJOM) points. The winner of the AJOM will receive an exemption into the MFS Australian Open. The last round will be held on Friday morning with the field cut to the top 25 players (plus ties) in each age division after 54 holes.

Gary Player is again the major sponsor of this event which is in its 35th year. The event has been a stepping stone for many great golfers including Greg Norman and more recently Jason Day who won this event last year (16 – 17 Years).
