After 54 holes in the 2006 Gary Player Classic, Jackson Park (Nudgee), Daniel Nisbet (Caboolture) and Ray Beaufils (Surfers Paradise) lead their respective age divisions leading into tomorrow’s final round. All three players held the lead after 36 holes and played steady golf on a difficult day to maintan their leads.
19 year old Beaufils, who recently represented Queensland in the Australian Interstate Series leads the 18 – 20 Years division by four shots after a round of 72 (even) today. Kevin Lee (Oxley) will be keen to start well tomorrow to put some pressure on Beaufils after his round of 71 (-1) today. In a fairly steady round of golf that featured only one birdie, Beaufils chipped in on the last hole (18th) for an eagle to extend his lead.
In third place a further three shots back is local player and Queensland representative Brett Rankin (-2), while another Pacific member Kurt Carlson is at even par, along with Mitchell Early (Club Pelican).
In the 16 – 17 Years division, Australian and Queensland Junior representative Daniel Nisbet (Caboolture), returned a respectable round of 73 ( 1) today, after his superb round of 64 (-8) yesterday. His total of 209 (-7) is just 2 shots in front of fellow Australian teammate Tarquin MacManus (Pacific) after he returned the day’s equal best round of 69 (-3).
A further six shots back is Kris O’Sullivan (Royal Queensland) at 217 ( 1) and Mark Song is on 218 ( 2).
Maintaining his lead today in the youngest age division (15 Years and Under), Jackson Park (Nudgee) had a disappointing round of 78 ( 6). He has a 2 shot lead over another Park, Andrew (Indooroopilly) who fired an excellent round of 72 (even) today. Chris Wood (Wynnum) remains in touch with the leader four shots back after a 79 ( 7) today.
The Gary Player Classic is one of Australia’s most prestigous events for young golfers and the players always look forward to the traditional Presentation Luncheon will be held tomorrow following the close of play. All top 10 players are invited to attend, as are the previous winners of the event which stretches back 35 years.
The Queensland Golf Union is again very grateful to Mr Gary Player who has again been a great supporter of this event and junior golf in Queensland over the last 35 years.
