For the second time in just three days, 16-year-old Daniel Nisbet has fired a 64 (-8) at the Pacific Golf Club to win the Gary Player Classic this morning. It was a phenominal finish by the Australian and Queensland Junior Team member, who is also the current Queensland Junior Champion.
Nisbet finished at 273 (-15) with rounds of 72.764.73.64 and won by nine shots from fellow Australian representative Tarquin MacManus (Pacific).
It was another eleven shots back to third place getter Mark Song (Indooroopilly) and MacManus must feel somewhat unlucky to have come up against Nisbet in such unbelievable form. In fact Nisbet, managed an amazing 28 birdies through the four rounds on a golf course that is considered challenging to say the least. Interestingly in 2004 in the this event, as a 14 year old Nisbet shot 66 (-6) and in 2005 he managed a 65 (-7) showing the natural talent that this young man has.
Kevin Lee (Oxley) has overtaken 54 hole leader Ray Beaufils (Surfers Paradise) with a quality display shooting 66 (-6) today to win the 18 – 20 Years division. Lee’s round was somewhat overshadowed by Nisbet’s 64, but was a fantastic round given the circumstances. Lee finished on 277 (-11) with rounds of 67.73.71.66, two shots ahead of Beaufils 279 (-9).
In third place a further five shots back was local player and Queensland representative Brett Rankin 284 (-4), while another Pacific member Kurt Carlson finsihed in 4th place with a total of 290 ( 2)is at even par.
In a fantastic finish to the youngest age division (15 Years and Under), Chris Wood (Wynnum) defeated Jackson Park (Nudgee) on the first hole of a sudden death playoff, after both players finished on 298 ( 10). Woods managed to sink a putt of approximately 40 feet on the par 5, 1st hole to take the title, and his biggest win to date. Woods round of 73 ( 1) today was an excellent round and at just 15 years of age, has shown great potential.
Although Park had a disappointing round of 77 ( 5) today, he will go away, pleased with his performance during the week, in which he lead for most of the 4 days, only to be pipped at the post by Woods. Finishing on 302 ( 14) was another talented young player, Andrew Park (Indooroopilly) who at just 14 years has plenty of years ahead.
The 2006 Gary Player Classic was again a fantastic event this week, attracting a number of interstate and international players, in addition to the local players who are amoungst the best in Australia. The Gary Player Classic has become recognised throughout Australia as one of the leading Championship’s for young golfers and its status as an Australian Junior Order of Merit event, only strengthens that reputation.
Daniel Nisbet will take away the 10 AJOM points from this event which will give him the lead with only a couple of events remaining. On offer for the winner is an invitation to contest the MFS Australian Open at Royal Sydney in November.
The Queensland Golf Union would like to convey its thanks to Mr Gary Player, and Adina Watches for the continued support of this event, and also the fantastic Pacific Golf Club which has become the home of the Gary Player Classic.
