At the official launch of the 2006 MFS Australian Open, Golf Australia announced the “A Team” Appleby and Allenby will join the marquee list of players Greg Norman, Adam Scott, Geoff Ogilvy and Aaron Baddeley as contenders for the Open. Golf Australia also announced a $250,000 increase for a total event prize pool of $1.5 million.
This year’s Open celebrates Australian golf and the unprecedented success of Australian golfers on the world stage. With 13 Aussies in the top 100, a record number of wins by Australians on the PGA Tour, Adam Scott’s number 4 ranking in the world (a feat not achieved since the legendary Shark ruled golf) and Ogilvy winning the coveted US Open, the greens at Royal Sydney are set to sizzle.
“What can I say? The facts speak for themselves and our golfers are amongst the best in the world. This year’s MFS Australian Open is a one of a kind opportunity to see the best in action from close quarters,” enthused Paul McNamee, Executive Chairman Australian Opens, Golf Australia.
“With Stuart and Robert on board we have secured a real challenge for the Stonehaven Cup. Stuart Appleby has one, Aaron Baddeley and Robert Allenby both have two, Greg Norman has five while Adam Scott and Geoff Ogilvy really want one. It is the jewel in the crown of Australian golf.”
Stuart Appleby a two time winner on the PGA Tour this year is a tough contender and ready to reclaim the Australian Open title. Appleby attending the media conference at Royal Sydney, commented, “The Australian Open is an important focus of all Australian players come the end of the year. I’m proud to be a part of what promises to be a great event.”
Defending Open Champion, Robert Allenby, with 15 years professional experience and holder of the ’Triple Crown’, the 2005 MFS Australian Open, Cadbury Schweppes PGA Championship and the MasterCard Masters, will not be relinquishing his title easily.
The line up does not stop there, also set for this year’s event are Australians Mathew Goggin, Richard Green, Nathan Green, two-time winner Peter Lonard, Nick O’Hern, Rod Pampling, Craig Parry, John Senden, Peter Senior, Peter O’Malley and Stephen Leaney.
Overseas challengers will be soon on deck, led by rising US star Sean O’Hair, 2005 rookie of the year and 2005 John Deere Classic winner. He will be backed up by four time tour winner Bob Estes. “Sean will undoubtedly be one to watch out for. As we get closer we will announce more international entrants to the field,” said McNamee.
The 2006 MFS Australian Open is the first Open to be played under the new Golf Australia banner and it has been a priority of the new organisation to re-build the status of the event.
“We set ourselves a challenge and together with our sponsors, our media partners, the introduction of new spectator initiatives and the support of the players we believe that we are on the way to deliver an event that all Australians will enjoy.
“Australians are passionate about their sport. It’s timely to recognise the achievements of our players, welcome international competitors and celebrate Australian golf,” McNamee added.
The 2006 MFS Australian Open will be played November 13 – 19 at The Royal Sydney Golf Club.
