Price, Buckle consolidate Tour hopes at Permian Basin

Brandt Snedeker’s win in this week’s Nationwide Tour event, the Permian Basin Charity Classic, has seen him guarantee himself a trip to the USPGA Tour for the first time as a card holder in 2007.
Snedeker a player good enough to win the Public Links Championship in 2003 and thereby play the US Masters in 2004, has now won twice in playoffs in 2006 and along with his runner up placing in Chattanooga he has assured himself not only of status on the PGA Tour in 2006 but a relatively high position on the Nationwide Tour money list at the completion of the season. The higher the finish the better as that will provide greater access to events at the beginning of season 2007 in the big league.
Snedeker defeated Australian Aron Price at the first extra hole of a playoff after Price produced a final round of 66 to catch the third round leader.
For Price, who due to only limited status has been able to play only sparingly on the Nationwide Tour this season, this was an impressive result despite the disappointment of the playoff loss. The University of Southern Georgia graduate has made big strides since turning professional and this is an example of just how good he could become. A fourth placed finish at the Jacob’s Creek event early in the season gave him the occasional start but he has had to mix those events with play on the Grey Goose and Hooters Tours.
The runner up cheque will take Price to US$115,000 on the money list and because of his good finish here he will get a start next week in South Carolina. With three events left on this season’s Nationwide Tour he needs another US$100,000 to have any chance of finishing inside the top twenty but this result in Texas at least gives him hope.
While Price has a lot of ground to make up, Andrew Buckle all but secured his status with a share of fourth this week. The US$20,500 he earns have moved him to 16th on the money list with US212,000 and it would seem just a few thousand short of where he needs to be to be assured of joining Snedeker on the PGA Tour next year.
Matthew Jones was 6th and moves to US$116,000 while Jarrod Lyle’s 18th place moves him inside the top twenty.
The Nationwide Tour moves to South Carolina for the inaugural PalmettoPride Championship.
