17-year-old Gold Coast based South Korean, Amy Yang, who last week announced her decision to turn professional, has been invited to play in the popular Daikin Night Golf Shootout on October 31st, the prelude to the Greater Building Society’s Queensland PGA Championship.

The event, which is to be played over the floodlit back nine of the Emerald Lakes Golf Club on the Gold Coast, will see Yang joining nine of the leading players who will later in the week play the Queensland PGA Championship at the same venue. A purse of $10,000 is up for grabs with the winner to receive $5,000.

Yang will join Peter Senior, Terry Price, Nick Teague, who has just completed his traineeship at Emerald Lakes, Kurt Barnes (2004 QLD PGA Champ), Michael Wright, David Diaz, (2003 QLD PGA Champ), Brad McIntosh, who last year became the first player to break 60 in professional event in Australia, Rowan Beste (Defending Daikin Night Shoot-out winner) and Lucas Parsons.

“I have been aware of this event previously and when I heard that there was a chance that I could play this year I was delighted,” said Yang. “I had to finalise my schedule before I could commit but I am now really looking forward to being involved.” Yang will return from her first event as a professional in Dubai on the eve of the Daikin Night Shootout.

The format for the shootout will see one player per hole eliminated until the two remaining players reach Emerald Lakes’ 18th hole, the 9th hole of the evening.

In each of the three years in which the event has been held to date, the field has contained a lady golfer. Jenny Sevil made it to the 5th hole in 2003 and Tamara Johns made it to hole four in 2004 but was knocked out early last year.

A large Gold Coast audience, including many of Yang’s schoolmates from the nearby Robina High School, is expected to be at Emerald Lakes to support the young lady who won the hearts and admiration of many with her stunning win over the likes of Karrie Webb and many of the world’s leading players at the ANZ Ladies Masters in February.

David White, the General Manger of Nifsan, the promoters of the event and at whose facility both the Daikin Night Golf Shootout and the Greater Building Society Queensland PGA Championship are to be played, spoke of his pleasure to learn of Amy’s involvement. “The Daikin Night Golf Shootout has been an absolute feature of tournament week and with Amy involved in 2006 we feel confident that we can attract even stronger support from the local community.”

Speaking on behalf of the Queensland PGA, their Senior Executive Officer Gavin Kirkman expressed his delight in having Yang involved. “Part of our agenda at the PGA is to grow the game generally and having someone as talented as Amy representing women’s golf in the Daikin Night Golf Shootout will certainly assist us in doing that. She will be a popular participant in the event.”

The event is at 6.00pm for a 6.30pm start on October 31st.
