Kurt Barnes has opened the 2006 Minniecon and Burke Queensland Masters with a 7 under par round of 65 to take the outright lead at the conclusion of the first round. Barnes opened with three birdies in the first six holes and shot 32 on the back nine to complete a bogey free round and a one stroke lead.

In second position is Victorian Cameron Percy, who after spending most of the year on the US Nationwide Tour has come back to play on the Von Nida Tour before a very busy four weeks on the Australasian Tour including the Cadbury Schweppes Australian PGA Championship.

The scores on day one were some of the best we have experienced all year, which is a credit to Don Matheson and his team of ground staff, who have got the course in remarkable condition. 67 of the 137 professionals in the field shot even par or better on day one with the projected cut to be somewhere around the two under mark tomorrow afternoon. The leading amateur after day one is Queenslander state team member Nathan Uebergang, who after a runner up finish in the amateur section of the Cairns Classic last week, will be looking to go one better here at the Willows Golf Resort.

Other class players sitting back just a few shots off the pace include Craig Spence (69), Peter Senior (69), Marc Leishman (69) and Andrew Bonhomme (68), who will all be looking to consolidate tomorrow.
