Victorian Jason Norris is on top of the leaderboard near the close of play in today’s second round of the NSW Open Championship, at Horizons Golf Resort, Salamander Bay. Norris leads by one stroke, with South Australian Brendon Chant close behind in a three-way tie for second.
Chant was thankful that yesterday’s gusty afternoon conditions stayed away, as he tore up the leaderboard, to be seven under with three holes left to play.
Sydney amateur Neven Basic, who learned of his tournament berth just minutes before the start of play yesterday, continued his rich vein of form to be six under for the tournament, just three shots off the lead. Former PGA Champion Wayne Grady scored a five under 67 to be well positioned at four under.
Tony Gresham, a former NSW Open champion, has praised the performance of the amateur contingent in the NSW Open Championship, at Horizons Golf Resort, Salamander Bay. Watching the second round of the event today, the 1975 champion said he was happy to see the young players in the field battling for a place at the top of the leaderboard.
“It’s great to the NSW Open back again. It’s great to see so many of the amateurs able to play and to see quite a few of them on the leaderboard.”
Gresham said the response from the professionals in the tournament had been very positive as well.
“The course is in fabulous condition, from all reports the professionals are loving it. They’re thoroughly enjoying the venue and the way the course is being run. It ‘s a pretty tough course, where you’ve got to be on the straight and narrow.”
