Three Australian golfers have made it through to the quarter finals of the Lion Foundation New Zealand National Women’s Amateur Championship being played in Nelson.

Sarah Jane Kenyon, last night announced as the Queensland Female Amateur Golfer of the Year, is through after qualifying third after winning her first two matches. Also there will be Victoria’s 21 year old Melanie Holmes-Smith, the runner up in qualifying and 18 year old New South Welsh junior Nikki Garrett.

Four other Australians who made it through qualifying were early casualties in the match play namely Heidi McCulkin, Kate McMahon, Belinda Kerr and Kristee La Rocca.

The Australians will face stiff competition from Esperito Santo rep, Tina Howard and ex New Zealand rep, Anita Boon but Kenyon still looks a player with a big future in the game.
