Angel Cabrera, who is looking for his second title of 2002, birdied the final four holes to close the first round of the Volvo Masters with a superb -8 (63) and a four-stroke lead over Welshman Phillip Price in the final event of the year on the European PGA Tour. Cabrera came within one shot of matching the course record at the Valderrama Golf Club, which was previously set by Germany’s Bernhard Langer.
Ireland’s Padraig Harrington had a day he would rather forget. His rollercoaster round consisted of four birdies, two double-bogeys and a bogey on his way to a 3 (74). Harrington’s day began with a double-bogey at the first hole after taking a two-stroke penalty for repairing a pitch mark on the fringe of the green while his ball was still on the putting surface.
Harrington started the tournament just 22,834.63 Euros behind Goosen for the number one spot on the European Order of Merit. Goosen, the world number four, went one stroke better than Harrington and closed with a 2 (73).
Price claimed outright second place following a 67, one shot better than a group of five players that included Denmark’s Steen Tinning, the recent winner of the Madrid Open.
Richard leads the way for the small Australasian field following an opening round -1 (70) to close the day in 12th place and one stroke ahead of Jarrod Moseley in 17th place. Adam Scott matched rounds with Peter O’Malley to claim equal 24th at 1.
