21-year-old Ashley Umbers from Northern Victoria kept his cool over four testing days of golf to take out the 2007 NEC Master of the Amateurs Championship which concluded at Yarra Yarra Golf Club in Melbourne this afternoon. With rounds of 69, 70, 73 and 72 today he finished four shots clear of Ryan Mccarthy And Daniel Popovic.
Umbers, who is a member of the Rich River Golf Club said he was tested by the heat especially on Tuesday when it reached 40-degrees, and even over the last three or four holes today. He was introduced to golf his fatherand has been playing and loving it ever since.
The new champion was high in the praise of the tournament.
“It is the second time I have played this event it is for amateurs, but it is run very professionally and great to play”, he said.
Umbers is the 10th winner of Master of the Amateurs, six previous winners have gone on to turn professional, but he has no short term plans to follow in their footsteps. He will be presented with the “Green Jacket” by the 2006 NEC Master of the Amateurs Jason Day at a gala dinner at the RACV Club in Melbourne tonight.
Tournament Director Peter Mann praised Umbers efforts in the trying conditions and against the best field of amateurs ever assembled in the history of this event.
“Ninety-two played after a series of qualifying rounds in Australia and New Zealand. Despite some very difficult conditions over the four days, there were still some great scores on a course that’s lived up to it’s reputation as one of the best in Melbourne”, he said.
