The Queensland Golf Union has announced that it will hold the inaugural Queensland Indigenous Championships at Murgon Golf Club from Friday 23rd to Sunday 25th March. Open to both male and female Indigenous amateur golfers, the event will be held at Murgon Golf Club, about 3 hours drive north of Brisbane.
The event is something that has been in planning for the last couple of years and the QGU is very pleased that the event will finally come to fruition, with excellent support from the Queensland Government via Sport and Recreation. Aimed at increasing participation in the Indigenous Community, as well as identifying the best Indigenous golfers, the event is sure to be a success with the first 2 events (2007 and 2008) confirmed at Murgon Golf Club.
The Murgon Golf Club and Murgon community are extremely excited about the prospect of hosting the State Indigenous Championship and are confident that Indigenous communities in the South East and Northern parts of the State will support the event.
Likely to challenge for the Championship are upcoming impressive young golfers, Jaryd Grant (Gailes) and Renton Richie (Hervey Bay) who have recently competed in the State Junior Championship at Indooroopilly last week. Richie finished with his best ever performance, in fourth position and Grant finished equal 10th. Both players are part of the QGU’s Development Squad and are really looking forward to the Championship.
With the Championship taking place over 54 holes, the QGU and the Murgon Golf Club will also host a Welcome Ceremony for the players on Thursday 22nd March at 6:00pm with a Local Elder to officially open the Championship. The event will then conclude on Sunday 25th with a Championship dinner including the official presentation of trophies.
