Price is right at Horizons Resort

Queensland’s Terry Price has often threatened big things with his golfing career but the immense potential he has often displayed, while making him a nice living, has not measured up to that promise. Arguably his biggest victory came in 1993 at the Air New Zealand Shell Open in Auckland but there have been many wins in lesser events, most of them in Queensland or in areas where warm season grasses predominate. Price’s game however is suited to quality golf courses, as he is a fine ball striker, and the Horizons Resort provided just that this week as he produced a last round seventy to come from eighth to first on the final day.

Many of those in or near the lead heading into day four were unable to capitalise on the position they had created for themselves. Overnight leaders Tony Carolan and Jon Riley produced rounds of 76 and 79 respectively to fall off the radar screen. Jason Norris too, in great position to challenge in round four, could only manage a 73 and whilst second was a good finish, he would no doubt have been disappointed at not finishing it off.

Price’s win and the accompanying $36,000 moves him to 24th on the 2002 Order of Merit with a touch over $91,000.

Tied in second were Norris, New Zealander Mahal Pearce, in what must be his best professional finish, recent Eisenhower rep turned professional Adam Groom, Andre Stoltz and Wayne Grady.

The leading amateur was 20 year old Queenslander Richard Moir, the Riversdale Cup winner this year, who finished in tenth place.

The top ten from this event, not otherwise qualified, get starts in the 2002 Holden Australian Open, as this event was effectively being used as one of the qualifiers for the next big event starting Nov 21st. We will endeavour to get those names as soon as they become available but one look at the leaderboard suggests there will be several players heading for the Victoria Golf Club in two weeks time who may not have expected such at the start of the week.
