Gifted Melbourne golfer Ashley Hall intends maintaining his flying start to his professional career with a strong outing in the Von Nida Tour’s season-opening event, the nab Victorian PGA Championship at Sanctuary Lakes.
The 23-year-old won the Australasian PGA Tour Qualifying School Final Stage six weeks ago and is now ready to challenge for the state title being played at Sanctuary Lakes from January 25 – 28.
Hall, a member of the VIS golf program, defeated an experienced line-up of players at the Qualifying School.
That fine achievement came straight after a ninth place finish in the Asian PGA Tour Qualifying School. “Winning the qualifying school was great and I’m feeling confident heading into the Victorian PGA Championship,” Hall said.
“I really like the course at Sanctuary Lakes. It sets up good and from what I hear it will play quite linksy with the fairways running fast. I’ve played those sort of courses in the UK and done well before.”
Hall has spent considerable time as a Victorian Institute of Sport golf scholarship holder – a program that has produced a succession of top players including US Open champion Geoff Ogilvy, Stuart Appleby, Robert Allenby and Aaron Baddeley.
And like many of those stars, Hall pays tribute to the VIS system, describing the coaching and support staff as outstanding.
“They’ve all helped me a real lot. In the last three years I have improved out of sight, especially the level of consistency right throughout my game. And that’s why I think I’m ready for pro golf. I feel I can match it with the best players.”
