An impressive field of professional and amateur golfers including 25 of the top 30 from the 2006 Von Nida Tour Order of Merit have assembled for the Victorian Open Championship which tees off tomorrow at the Woodlands Golf Club in Melbourne's famous sandbelt district.

The second event on the 2007 Von Nida Tour schedule, the Victorian Open will boast a quality field that includes former world amateur champion Jason Day, who is set to make his professional debut in an Australian tournament, US PGA Tour player Steve Bowditch and former interim tennis coach for Australian ace Lleyton Hewitt, Scott Draper.

Defending Champion David Diaz is also set to challenge in addition to other previous winners Kurt Barnes (2005), Scott Laycock (2001), Brad Lamb (2000), and Lucas Parsons (1993) who will all be eager to have their names etched on the prestigious Open Championship trophy once again.

Dual winner on last year's Von Nida Tour and Order of Merit (OOM) winner, Marc Leishman is a confirmed starter as is other 2006 Von Nida Tour winners Steven Jeffress (nab Vic PGA Championship), Cameron Percy (Minniecon & Burke QLD Masters and Greater Building Society QLD PGA Championship), Ricky Schmidt (Roadcon Group QLD Open), Andrew Pitt (WA PGA Championship) and amateur golfer Rick Kulacz who claimed the Proton NSW Open late last year and became the first amateur to win a Von Nida event.

West Australian and 2005 Von Nida Tour OOM winner Kim Felton is also entered as is Nick Flanagan, Peter Fowler, James Nitties and veteran competitor Peter Senior.

Add to the mix other Von Nida Tour regulars Michael Brennan, Dean Alaban, Aaron Townsend, Anthony Painter, Luke Hickmott and Tony McFadyean as well as leading amateur player Aaron Pike and the stage is set for a wonderful event.

Many of the great champions of Australian and International golf have won the Victorian Open. Players such as Peter Thomson, Greg Norman, Bob Shearer, Ian Stanley, Ian Baker-Finch and Robert Allenby have all won the prestigious title in the past.

The Victorian Open Championship will be held over 72 holes at the Woodlands Golf Club, White Street, Mordialloc between Thursday 1st and Sunday the 4th of February. The cut will be made after play on Friday with the top 50 professionals and ties battling it out over the weekend.
