Tim Stewart of Monash Country Club leads the NSW Amateur Championship after today’s opening round. Played at dual venues, Mona Vale Golf Club and Cromer Golf Club in Sydney’s Northern Suburbs, Stewart has started his attempt to add the NSW title to his 2006 Australian Amateur Championship with an impressive five under par (65) at the carefully redeveloped Cromer Golf Course.
On a course in which most of the competitors struggled, Stewart was all class and is probably a little surprised to only hold a one stroke advantage over fellow National Squad member, Rohan Blizard (66 at Cromer of NSW Golf Club) and Jared Consoli (68 at Mona Vale GC of Queensland).
The leading duo are closely followed by State Colts Scott Arnold (Cronulla GC) and Matthew Jones (Easte Leisure and Golf Club). The best placed of the International entrants after round one are Englishman David Horsey (-2 at Cromer GC) and Stephen Lewton (-1 at Cromer GC).
The Championships continue tomorrow at both Mona Vale and Cromer Golf Clubs before the top 60 plus ties proceed on Monday with 36 holes at Mona Vale Golf Club.
Following play on Monday, the leading 32 players progress to the Matchplay phase (at Terrey Hills Golf and Country Club) of which 5 rounds of 36 hole matchplay are conducted before the crowning of the Imagetec 100th NSW Amateur Champion.
